About the project

In a unique and haunting performance, ‘A Winter Journey’ combines the universal language of classical music with dance, light and video art to make a strong artistic statement about the importance of shared communication in today's world.

The interdisciplinary project is based on Franz Schubert's song cycle ‘Die Winterreise’ based on texts by Wilhelm Müller and combines them with the haunting poems of the Polish poet Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński (1921-1944), whose death and the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising will be commemorated for the 80th time in 2024. Baczyński's poetic oneirism, which describes a constant shift between dream and nightmare in his verses, becomes a central means of expression in the performance, which thematically navigates between sleep, fear and death.

‘Eine Winterreise’ tells the story of abandonment, of the transition into another dimension - be it through fatigue, dream or death. Even in the worst nightmare, there is an awakening that gives us relief; and after the most beautiful dream, there is still the confrontation with reality. Baczyński's poetic world harmonises with Schubert's musical dialogue between reality and dream and turns the ‘Winterreise’ into a moving reflection on loss, hope and the eternal search for human existence.
