OPENING promises a visionary contrast program

The opening performance commences with Mendelssohn's second string quartet in A minor, composed by the prodigious talent at a mere 18 years old, standing alongside his Octet as a paradigm of Mendelssohn's youthful genius. What captivates is the array of references and parallels to the "Übermensch," Beethoven, who passed away in Vienna in 1827, the same year the A minor quartet was composed. The second string quartet can be perceived as a homage from the young Mendelssohn to the legendary Beethoven, interwoven with allusions, notably to Beethoven's late String Quartet op. 132 in the same key of A minor.

Following this classical homage, a vibrant shift occurs: the "visions" transform their guise to present pieces from their album, Spectrum. What lies ahead is a musical odyssey unrestrained by boundaries, marked by personal experiences, encounters both new and old, and delicate impressions drawn from diverse cultures. Solely wielding their four string instruments, they craft an entire auditory universe—from guitar, ukulele, and bass to bongos or even a complete drum set.

Kubus

Venue

The Kühlhaus Berlin is an industrial monument located in the heart of Berlin in the immediate vicinity of Potsdamer Platz, right next to the Technical Museum Berlin. Built at the turn of the century in 1900, it is now a universal cultural centre that hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year, from readings and concerts to fashion fairs and food markets. The Kühlhaus, with its 6 floors and the Kubus in the middle, provides the ideal setting for our festival and a place where experimentation and reflection are virtually forced upon us. The Kubus makes a wide variety of event formats possible; the musicians can play from hidden galleries, position themselves in the middle like at a boxing match or perform over several floors.
