Mozart – Schönberg – Brahms

A concert melange of masterpieces - Vienna, where musical creativity has produced a wealth that one can only marvel at. A wealth of sounds of the native, the homeland as well as the foreign, the associated and the assimilated. The Piano Quintet op. 34 by Johannes Brahms was composed in 1864, one year after his move from Hamburg to Vienna, where he spent his life until his death in 1897. Ten years later, in 1874, Arnold Schönberg was born in Vienna. They both lived in the musical metropolis on the Danube for 23 years, but never met in person. Schönberg emigrated to the USA in 1933 - for well-known reasons. In 1949, he composed a Fantasy for Violin and Piano, a nine-minute work based on the twelve-tone technique, a new organising principle at the time. Schönberg intertwined the concept of order with the demands of a fantasy in order to incorporate virtuosity and “open“ creative elements into his compositions and music.
